One-liner slogans may be what’s remembered of the Butch Jones era at Tennessee, whenever it’s over.

One of the first was that Jones said the Vols would build the program “brick by brick.” But this picture of the bricks in front of a national championship trophy under a stairwell drew the ire of Tennessee fans.

As one person wrote on Twitter, “That trophy was won by working like heck and watching video not some stupid slogan.”

“Every brick is symbolic of every person within our football program,” Jones was quoted as saying last year by the Knoxville News-Sentinel to explain how the phrase originated. “That’s why we still give bricks out when we start training camp with a brick-by-brick mentality. That is where that was born and then it kind of was confirmed when I was talking to (ESPN analyst and former NFL coach) Jon Gruden and he said, ‘Hey brother, just lay it brick by brick.’ So that kind of was confirmation on how we are going to build this football program.”

Jones is in his fifth season at Tennessee with a record of 33-24.

Tennessee is 3-3 this season and will play at No. 1 Alabama at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on Saturday on CBS.
