Squirrel White is the latest in a long line of SEC players who received a nickname from a family member.

In this case, White recently shared that his nickname, “Squirrel,” was from someone close to him, as his given name is Marquarius.

“My great grandma named me that when I was a baby when she was holding me. There was a squirrel in her garden and it picked her tomato and when the squirrel moved, I moved at the same time so she just started calling me that,” White said, per On3 Sports. He was listed at 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds coming out of high school.

White was an early enrollee at Tennessee coming out of high school as a 3-star prospect by 247Sports. In high school, he had 1,162 receiving yards on 49 catches and scored 17 total touchdowns, including 16 receiving as a senior.

It’s apparent that White will have a chance to play a big role in the Tennessee offense this season, as coach Josh Heupel discussed earlier this week.

“Squirrel is competitive, really smart and mature in the way that he handles himself in the building, in the meeting room and physically taking care of his body,” Heupel said, per Vols Wire. “His ability for the game not to be moving too fast, really almost from day one, in the way that he has handled what we do offensively.

“He needs to have a great camp for us and I believe that he will. He is truly fearless. He’s not the biggest guy, but he is fearless. He is going to stick his face in any physical situation that he needs to.”
