Immediately following the news that Tennessee had settled with its former Athletic Director John Currie Thursday evening, the school released all emails and phone records in connection to the school’s recent coaching search following a Freedom of Information Act request.

While the content of those emails and phone records is flooded with information, one exchange between Currie and USA TODAY national writer Dan Wolken is particularly interesting.

The exchange, first shared online by Jon Reed of FOX Sports Knoxville, shows Currie and Wolken having a back and forth discussing Tennessee’s potential hire of Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. Currie even asks for PR help from Wolken selling the hire as a good choice to the public. The former UT AD then uses some strange language to describe the Tennessee fan base: “Our people are wacko.”

Keep in mind, Currie described those same fans as “outstanding” in a statement (the statement has already been deleted by Currie) released Thursday evening after Tennessee’s settlement had been made public.

Following the fallout of Tennessee’s failed attempt to hire Schiano amid the incredible backlash from the Volunteer fanbase, Wolken would write a column calling out the fans that reacted negatively to Schiano’s near hire at Tennessee.
