The Tennessee football program has confirmed reports of receivers coach and passing coordinator Zach Azzanni leaving for an opportunity to coach receivers with the Chicago Bears. The move ends Azzanni’s four-year stay on Rocky Top and means head coach Butch Jones will be hiring the second receivers coach of his Tennessee tenure.

Jones released the following statement upon confirming the news.

“We are really excited for Zach and his family,” said Jones. “I have known Zach for a long time and this is a path he has wanted to pursue for some time. We can’t thank him enough for his loyalty, dedication and hard work over the past four years to our football program. We will begin the process of filling this position immediately. It’s a position we want to fill as quickly as we can, but we also want to go through the detailed process, which we will.”

Judging by his statement, Jones may already have an idea of which coach he will tab as his next receivers coach. One name to consider is former LSU and Auburn receivers coach Dameyune Craig. Craig is currently out of a job after LSU head coach Ed Orgeron relieved him of his duties the day after National Signing Day.

Craig played quarterback at Auburn, and while his coaching has been called into question by some, his recruiting ability is among the best in the SEC. Craig rated as the nation’s No. 5 recruiter in 2016, per 247Sports, and considering the in-state talent of Tennessee in the 2018 recruiting class, the Vols need to consider hiring the best recruiter possible to fill the position. Otherwise, some of the state’s top prospects could be leaving the state for the second consecutive recruiting cycle.
