Tennessee fans will get their wish, the end of the Tyson Helton era is over on Rocky Top.

Jeremy Pruitt’s first offensive coordinator hire at Tennessee has accepted the head coaching job at Western Kentucky, according to multiple reports. ESPN’s Chris Low was the first to report WKU’s interest in Helton with Darren McFarland of ESPN 102.5 The Game in Nashville being the first to report Helton had accepted the WKU job.

In his one season on Rocky Top, Helton managed to help turn Jarrett Guarantano into a viable option under center for Tennessee, something that was a complete question mark entering the season, and he helped the Vols land graduate transfer QB Keller Chryst from Stanford. Chryst never started for the Vols but saw some action this season after Guarantano suffered a few tough hits.

While there was some good with Helton, Tennessee fans were clearly over his offense as the team finished dead-last in the SEC in scoring offense and the playcalling at times was either terribly predictable or downright baffling.

Where Tennessee turns next for an offensive coordinator remains to be seen, but given the fact Pruitt turned to a first-time full-time play caller at the major college level and didn’t get great results, look for Pruitt to hire a coach with plenty of experience calling offensive plays. If he fails to do so and hires another OC that fails to deliver results, there’s a chance Pruitt won’t find success on Rocky Top.
