Tennessee made arguably the boldest move this offseason in the Southeastern Conference when it comes to assistant coaching hires as Jeremy Pruitt managed to pry Jim Chaney away from Georgia after one of the longest coordinator searches in recent history.

How long it took to pull off the hire didn’t matter the moment Tennessee fans found out Chaney would be returning to Rocky Top to coordinator the Volunteer offense following his first stint in Knoxville, which resulted in one of the best offenses in school history in his final season with the team.

The first test of Chaney’s offense came this spring as the Tennessee players he inherited had to buy-in to his system. Based on their recent media availability, there’s no doubt that has already been accomplished during camp.

“I love his offense, I love (Chaney’s) energy, he’s just a great coach,” Jauan Jennings said on Wednesday. “Not too much different in what he’s bringing, Pruitt has already laid down a blueprint for what we want to accomplish here at the University of Tennessee and we are going to do it.”

Of course, the one player Chaney has to work with the most is the team’s starting quarterback. We all know Chaney’s history when it comes to resurrecting careers of college quarterbacks and Jarrett Guarantano looks to join the long line of signal callers that max out their potential under the offensive coordinator.

“I think this staff is great,” Guarantano said on Wednesday. “Everything that we are doing, whether it’s Coach Chaney, Coach Weinke, or Coach Tee — all offensive coaches, I think we are on the same page this year and I think we are all working toward the same common goal.”

One thing Tennessee’s quarterback has discussed this offseason is the answers that Chaney’s offense provides. According to Guarantano, he and his teammates have begun to find those this spring on the practice field.

“It’s definitely helping a lot, I think a lot of guys are finding answers and they are finding what they want from the coaches and what they want the coaches to do,” he continued. “I absolutely feel like we are on the same page, so I think that as time goes on, there will be more things that we get done. I think there’s still more plays to be implemented in the offense, that’s really about it but as time goes on, time goes on — I think we’re going to be a better offense.”
