Quinn Ewers has reportedly been offered $6 million to put the NFL on hold for another year and enter the transfer portal.

One of his former teammates — wide receiver Johntay Cook — seems to believe Ewers isn’t quite worth that dollar amount. Shortly after On3 reported on the offer Ewers received, Cook jumped into the comment section on Twitter, saying “wasting yall money [for real].” Cook’s Twitter profile has since been set to private.

Cook spent 2 seasons with Ewers at Texas before transferring to Washington earlier this month. He’s a former 5-star recruit from the 2023 class who left Austin with just 16 career receptions on 22 targets.

When Cook announced his transfer to Washington, he posted on social media that he had “nothing but love for my former teammates at my previous university” and thanked Texas for “all the great competition and memories.” Three days later, he took a shot at his old quarterback.

Maybe this is nothing but sour grapes. The DeSoto native played in 14 games as a true freshman but saw his role reduced this season. He appeared in only 6 games and left the team in early November to enter the portal. At the time, coach Steve Sarkisian described the parting of ways as “mutual.”

Cook will look to restart his career at Washington, but first, he’ll see Ewers lead Texas in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. The Longhorns face Arizona State on Wednesday in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl (1 p.m. ET, ESPN). They are 2 wins away from playing for a national championship.

Ewers has been a bit of a mixed bag this season, ranking 28th nationally in Total QBR (73.0) and sitting outside the top 50 in EPA. The presence of Arch Manning on the depth chart behind Ewers has kept the Texas starter under an intense microscope all season long, particularly during SEC play late in the year. Sarkisian briefly went to Manning in the mid-season loss to Georgia, but Ewers has been the go-to starter for Texas when healthy this season.

In the first-round win over Clemson, Ewers completed 17 of his 24 passes for 202 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Texas won 38-24 as Ewers mostly managed the game well. He finished with an 87.5 QBR in the game — his best performance since Nov. 9 against Florida.

Ewers missed 2 games earlier in the year with an injury. He enters Wednesday’s quarterfinal game with 2,867 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. he has completed 66.5% of his passes on the year.
