Steve Sarkisian is set on his starting quarterback as Texas closes the book on spring practice for 2023.

Quinn Ewers has been named the Longhorns’ QB1, Sarkisian shared after Saturday’s Orange-White spring game.

Ewers is coming off of a 2022 season in which he was 172-of-296 passing for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Saturday, Ewers was 16-of-23 for 195 yards and a touchdown, leading the White team to a 21-10 victory.

Sarkisian named a starter, but he hopes to see Arch Manning and Maalik Murphy continue to compete for the backup role.

“I don’t ever want to take the stinger of these other guys that they’re not competing for something or that they’re not striving for something because they’re all talented players,” Sarkisian said, per Burnt Orange Nation. “They’re great teammates with one another and I think they appreciate how hard each of them work and I think we’re in a very fortunate position to have three quality guys in that room that work the way that they do.”

Texas opens the 2023 season against Rice on Sept. 2 before traveling to Alabama in Week 2. Ewers was off to a strong start last season against the Crimson Tide in Austin before leaving the game due to injury.
