Cal could have interest in possibly going after Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason for its vacancy after firing Sonny Dykes this past Monday, according to a report from FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman.

Mason has strong ties to the west coast after spending four seasons as a coveted assistant coach with Stanford from 2010-13 under David Shaw. He also had a previous stop at Utah (2002) and New Mexico State (2004).

Vanderbilt just wrapped up its best season under Mason, finishing 6-7 (3-5) with its first bowl appearance since James Franklin’s final year in Nashville (2013). Altogether, the Commodores have a 13-24 record during his three-year tenure.

The Golden Bears let go of Dykes after going 5-7 in 2016, missing the postseason for the third time in four years.
