Jake Dickert is set to depart Washington State to take the Wake Forest head coaching job, according to multiple reports.
The Athletic was first to share that news on Wednesday morning. Dickert replaces Dave Clawson, who stepped down earlier this week following a successful 11-year tenure in Winston-Salem.
Dickert doesn’t have any clear regional ties to Wake Forest or the state of North Carolina. He’s a Wisconsin native who spent the first part of his coaching career out west. His coaching tenure includes time at programs such as North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Wyoming.
Most recently, Dickert has been Washington State’s head coach for the past 3 seasons. He was also Wazzu’s interim head coach for 6 games in 2021. In total, he’s led the Cougars to a 23-20 record that includes an 8-4 campaign in 2024.
He’ll take over a Wake Forest program that has been reeling for the past 2 seasons. The Demon Deacons were never able to recover from the loss of Sam Hartman as they’ve gone 4-8 over the past 2 seasons with largely sub-par quarterback play. Prior to that run, Clawson led the program to a combined record of 19-8 from 2021-22, including a school-record-tying 11 win season in 2021.
Clawson is 1 of just 3 Wake Forest coaches all-time to win more than 50 games at the program, so Dickert has some big shoes to fill.
