Updated: Alabama CB arrested on DUI charge, Saban responds

Alabama sophomore cornerback Geno Smith was arrested for DUI and booked by the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Sunday morning. Smith’s bond was set at $1,000.

Smith became a significant contributor last year as a true freshman in Bama’s coveted Nickelback position. He made nine tackles, two pass breakups and two passes defended in a strong freshman campaign.

Alabama’s offseason has been quiet except for the four arrested in February for second-degree robbery and credit card fraud. All four were dismissed from the team.

Smith was expected to contend for the starting cornerback job vacated by Dee Milliner.

Updated: Saban responded to Smith’s arrest:

“This is obviously not the kind of behavior we expect from our players,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said in a university statement. “I don’t have all of the details at this point and will handle it appropriately once I’ve had a chance to review the information.”

  1. I doubt he’ll be playing in the season opener, for sure. Strange how these athletes do things to throw their careers away.

  2. Plenty of folks have had a few too many beers and drove anyways. Is it smart, No, but in the grand scheme of things going on these days (Vandy for example) it doesn’t have to be a career killer.
