There’s no denying that what Tide head coach Nick Saban has done in Tuscaloosa is magical. But how long is it to be repeated?

Alabama led the SEC with six players on the preseason All-SEC first team and 13 players named overall.

However, the big question for the Tide is how many of the 13 will fall short and how many will hit the mark?

Here’s a look at who’s going to disappoint us and who’s going to impress us in 2016.

WR CALVIN RIDLEY – FIRST TEAM

Impress

Ridley had a huge freshman season, coming away with a record-setting 1,045 receiving yards — the most of any other freshman in Alabama history. Previously, Amari Cooper held the No. 1 spot with 1,000 yards as a freshman in 2012.

Cooper still holds the official single-season record with 1,727 receiving yards in 2014, but Ridley is coming in hot this season, and Cooper’s record could fall.

The “sophomore slump” is unlikely to be an issue for Ridley this season. First of all, his freshman season showed a steady progression, with his best games coming at the end of the year. This type of progress breeds more optimism than the other way around.

Secondly, this Tide receiving corps is more talented than it has been in years, so double coverage on Ridley would be dangerous for opponents, and it won’t take them long to figure that out, if they haven’t already.

The quarterback “questions” won’t present any issues either. Regardless of who takes the field behind center come Sept. 3, Ridley will be a major factor for the offense.

TE O.J. HOWARD – FIRST TEAM

Impress

Howard was patient when it came to getting his shot. In 2013 and 2014, Howard had a combined 31 receptions for 529 yards and 2 TDs. In 2015, he had 38 receptions for 602 yards and 2 TDs. The most impressive part: 8 receptions, 267 yards and both TDs came in the two postseason games.

His patience paid off last season, and it still hasn’t escaped him. Nor has his focus.

During SEC Media Days, Howard told reporters one of the reasons he chose to stay at Alabama for his senior season was to become better. He has always been good, but he didn’t remind us of that until the postseason. But he knew. And his biggest desire is still to become even better.

Saban understands the gold he has in Howard. He is a talented player who is ready to truly work to be his best, and with the coaching staff and team behind him, there’s no doubt he’ll impress us in his senior season.

OL CAM ROBINSON – FIRST TEAM

Disappoint

Saban said Robinson’s weapon and drug charges weren’t as serious as OL Alphonse Taylor’s DUI charge, and while his justification is understandable, it isn’t entirely logical.

The charges were dropped, but it wasn’t because Robinson and teammate Hootie Jones were innocent — though they very well may be. It was officially because there was insufficient evidence. Unofficially, District Attorney Jerry Jones took other factors into consideration.

Jones told the media, “I want to emphasize once again that the main reason I’m doing this is that I refuse to ruin the lives of two young men who have spent their adolescence and teenage years, working and sweating, while we were all in the air conditioning.”

Robinson is a beast of an offensive lineman, and he has proven himself on the field year after year. But if you think that his off-the-field issues can’t impact his season, you’re living with your head in the sand. He needs to get his act together in order to have the kind of success he had last year.

DL JONATHAN ALLEN – FIRST TEAM

Impress

Despite having missed the spring game and much of spring practices with a shoulder injury, Allen is the anchor of this Tide defense. And his teammates know it.

“His game speaks for himself, and you kind of expect that from him,” Tide DB Eddie Jackson said. “He is a real savage out there. He plays like a bullet. Anybody that lines up in front of him, he’s going to give him his best.”

Allen has been proving himself since he arrived in Tuscaloosa in 2013, and when he chose to stay behind while his best friends — former Tide DLs A’Shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed — moved ahead to the NFL. He showed his commitment to Alabama, to Saban, to his teammates and to football.

Last season, he collected 12 sacks, 14.5 tackles for loss and 2 forced fumbles. You can argue that his 2015 numbers were boosted by being surrounded by the top defense in the nation, but he’ll prove you wrong.

LB REUBEN FOSTER – FIRST TEAM

Impress

Foster was a monster in 2015, collecting 73 tackles, 8 tackles for loss and 9 passes defended. And he’s not slowing down any time soon.

Allen may be an anchor, but Foster is the official leader of this Tide defense. With Reggie Ragland making his NFL debut in 2016, Alabama will be looking to Foster as the new defensive play-caller.

And while filling the shoes of Ragland is a big task, Foster is more than ready. In fact, Foster might even leave bigger shoes in his wake.

DB EDDIE JACKSON – FIRST TEAM

Impress

When Jackson announced he would be staying in Tuscaloosa for his senior season, the Tide fan base jumped for joy. That’s no surprise when you look at the kind of season Jackson had in his first season at safety. He wrapped up 2015 with 6 interceptions for 230 yards and 2 TDs. And let’s not forget his 46 tackles.

Now Jackson is looking to make 2016 even more memorable.

In addition to the preseason All-SEC team, Jackson was also named to the watch lists for the Jim Thorpe Award and the Walter Camp Award.

Jackson is on fire, and there’s no sign he’ll be slowing down for his senior season.

P JK SCOTT – FIRST TEAM

Impress

Scott averaged more than 44 yards per punt last season, and he averaged 48 yards per punt — the school record — in his freshman season.

Scott has been as steady as they come, and there’s no reason to doubt he’ll remain steady for the Tide. In fact, he hasn’t just been working to become a better or stronger punter. He’s been working to become a more consistent punter.

In his junior season, Scott will undoubtedly impress, and he may even finally pick up the Ray Guy Award.

OL ALPHONSE TAYLOR – SECOND TEAM

Disappoint

As a junior in 2015, Taylor started every game for the Tide, and he was indisputably a significant piece of the offensive puzzle.

But then came spring practices when he was kicked back to the second team and challenged by Saban to lose weight and get back in playing shape. Maybe this public criticism was a trigger for Taylor because fast forward three months and he’s just been arrested for a DUI and suspended indefinitely from the team.

Taylor is the third player to be arrested since spring practices ended, but his punishment has been more severe. According to Saban, Taylor’s DUI is more serious than Robinson’s offense because it puts other people in danger.

Taylor has implored the public to give him another chance.

But the bottom line is that if Taylor doesn’t get his head straight, he won’t just miss making the All-SEC team at the end of the season. He may not even see the field.

LB TIM WILLIAMS – SECOND TEAM

Impress

Like Howard, Williams had a slow start at Alabama, and even in 2015, he only showed us a bit of his potential.

But while he may not have been the most valuable member on the top defense in the nation, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a force on the field.

Even though Williams wasn’t a starter, he still put up some monster numbers. In his junior season, Williams finished No. 13 in the country in sacks with 10.5, while racking up 12.5 tackles for loss.

For the first time in his career at Alabama, Williams will be a starter. We’ve seen what he can do with minimal playing time. Now imagine what his stats will look like after a season of starting every game.

DB MINKAH FITZPATRICK – SECOND TEAM

Impress

Fitzpatrick is best known for his two pick-sixes against the Aggies last season, but he was a steady force all season long. The true freshman exploded on the scene in 2015 with 45 tackles and a team-high 11 defended passes. Oh, and did we mention that blocked punt he returned for a touchdown?

His performance for the Tide last year earned him the starting spot that was left vacant by former Tide CB Cyrus Jones.

Fitzpatrick demonstrated great ability, a tireless work ethic and excitement for the game in 2015, and he’s showing no sign of slowing down any time soon, so expect great things from him in his sophomore season.

PK ADAM GRIFFITH – SECOND TEAM

Disappoint

Griffith holds the No. 2 and the No. 3 spot with the most PATs in a single season for Alabama, making 53 of 54 in 2014 and making 62 for 62 in 2015. Field goals are another story.

He’s made a career total of 36 field goals in 54 attempts. The Polish-orphan-turned-Tide-football-star may be well known for his fairytale story, but he’s also known for missing the uprights, including one infamous one that fell short. I think we all know what I’m talking about.

His consistency needs work.

I’m not saying being a kicker is by any means easy, and fans don’t make it any easier for him.

Sure, some kickers come and go, and the fans barely remember them. Some are remembered with excitement — think Van Tiffin in the 1985 Iron Bowl. Some are remembered with disgrace — think Cade Foster in 2011 against LSU and Ryan Pflugner in the 2000 Orange Bowl. And some are remembered for the way your stomach turned every time they walked onto the field.

Griffith is more in the final category, and for the sake of your sanity, you shouldn’t expect an impressive season from the senior.

C ROSS PIERSCHBACHER – THIRD TEAM

Disappoint

Pierschbacher started every game in 2015 at left guard, but after former Tide C Ryan Kelly vacated the spot, Saban made the decision to move him into the spot. The young lineman was eager to do what was best for his team.

“I’m embracing the change of wherever the team needs me,” Pierschbacher said back in the spring. “I think (the coaches) are trying out some new stuff in spring and seeing where guys fit.”

The Iowa native seemed to think — or hope — the move was temporary, but as it stands, he will be the Tide’s starting center.

Sure, Pierschbacher will do fine in his new position, but he’s no Kelly, and that simple fact will leave some disappointed throughout the season.

DB MARLON HUMPHREY – THIRD TEAM

Impress

When you’re playing in the shadow of Tide stars Jackson and Fitzpatrick, landing on the third team is about the best that can be expected. Despite being one of the best backs in the league in 2015, he made plenty of rookie mistakes.

But he’s back with a year of experience under his belt, and he’s expected to not just be Alabama’s top cornerback but one of the top cornerbacks of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He’s big, he’s fast, he’s talented, and he won’t disappoint us this fall.
