If anyone was hoping for some clarity on the Alabama quarterbacking situation to come from Nick Saban’s Week 1 press conference, they are likely disappointed with what the Crimson Tide head coach had to say.

As expected, Saban was peppered with questions about his unsettled quarterback position in Tuscaloosa on Monday, but it appears as though the competition is as up in the air as it has been for the majority of the preseason.

Saban did, however, give some clarity as to how the Crimson Tide will divvy up practice snaps for the remainder of the week heading into Saturday’s clash with Wisconsin.

Senior Jake Coker, sophomore Cooper Bateman and junior Alec Morris will split the reps.

“Those three guys have gotten the bulk of the reps,” Saban said. “Each day we’ll have an order that they get some many reps based on what we would do if they get an opportunity to play in the game. That’s how we’re going to progress this week.

“I’ve been really pleased with all three of the quarterbacks that have taken some reps on practice. Jake (Coker) has really done a good job of getting the ball out of his hand and seems to be more comfortable with the offense. Cooper Bateman is more athletic and has really improved as a passer and done a really good job executing and Alec (Morris) is very, very comfortable in running the offense in terms of knowledge and experience and that type of thing.”

Saban waited until the day before the season started to inform 2014 starter Blake Sims that he had won the job.

When pressed on if he would have a timetable for naming one of the three as the starting quarterback, Saban declined to set a deadline.

“I’d have liked to let him know three months ago,” Saban said. “But it’s not about what I like. It’s about what we need to do for our team right now and making a decision for our team. We’re going to make the decision when we think it is the right time to make the decision for this group of guys, alright?

“I’m hopeful that one of these guys does a great job. Look, I’m confident in all the guys. I’m confident that they can play well in this game. I just would like to see somebody win the team over, which may not happen until they play. When you have guys that haven’t played before, I think that’s always the case. I like the attitude that we have on offense, I like the approach that our players have, and I think our players have confidence in what each one of these guys can do well.”

While not necessarily endorsing the idea, Saban did not rule out the possibility of using multiple quarterbacks during the season-opener.

“There’s been a lot of people that have had success playing two quarterbacks,” Saban said. “Especially if they have a little different style, which a couple of our guys do have a different style.”

Coker, who is a former transfer from Florida State, is the only quarterback in the competition that has attempted a pass in a game. He has 698 career passing yards in limited work over 18 games.

Injury update: Saban opened the presser with some injury updates on senior WR Parker Barrineau and junior lineman Korren Kirven. He believes they will both return to practice at some point this week, but may not practice enough to play. He termed them both as “questionable” for Saturday’s game against Wisconsin.
