Once a position of strength, Alabama’s running back stable has thinned out significantly since the offseason began.

After suffering an injury in Friday’s scrimmage, the worst fears for running back Bo Scarbrough appear to be true. According to reports from TideSports.com and AL.com, Scarbrough tore his anterior cruciate ligament and will require surgery, which will sideline him for the rest of spring practice and likely into the fall.

The freshman, who sat out last season due to eligibility issues, becomes the third running back Alabama has lost since its season ended. Altee Tenpenny decided to transfer in January and Tyren Jones was dismissed from the team last week after he was arrested for marijuana possession while he was already suspended. Scarbrough is also the second Alabama player to tear an ACL this spring, following wide receiver Cam Sims’ injury a week ago.

Scarbrough was expected to be a factor in the backfield this fall behind Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake. Alabama still has early enrollee freshman Desherrius Flowers backing up those two in spring practice, while the same TideSports report says that fellow early enrollee Ronnie Harrison has taken some snaps at running back this spring. The nation’s top running back recruit, Damien Harris, joins their ranks this fall.
