Heading into a critical season on the Plains, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is obviously looking to avoid the missteps of previous seasons.

Before any discontent could bleed into the season, the Tigers dismissed likely starting running back Jovon Robinson off the team. Considering Malzahn gave talented receiver Duke Williams every opportunity to earn his way out of the dog house last season, with the heat on him this season, Auburn’s coach wasn’t willing to do the same for Robinson.

Looking to also avoid last season’s quarterback carousel that plagued the 2015 campaign, Malzahn appears eager to name the team’s starting quarterback as soon as possible. The Tiger coach didn’t rule out the possibility of naming a starter under center following the first scrimmage of the season, which will be held Tuesday.

“You know, I guess it’s always possible,” Malzahn said, according to Brandon Marcello of Auburn Undercover. “It’s possible.”

While true freshman Woody Barrett has already been ruled out as a potential starter, redshirt senior Jeremy Johnson, redshirt sophomore Sean White and junior college transfer John Franklin III are all being given a shot to win the job in fall camp.

“I’m hoping somebody out of the there steps up so we can name a guy,” Malzahn said. “Like I said, sooner than later.”
