The Auburn Tigers survived a scare from South Carolina last week. Gus Malzahn’s team now travels to Oxford to face No. 3 Ole Miss.

Let’s take a look inside the numbers of Auburn’s 6-1 start.

The Good

395: The number of rushing yards Auburn amassed on the ground last week. We were reminded just how good that offense can be when the Tigers run the football effectively. Conversely, when the Rebels are beaten at the line of scrimmage and pounded, we saw how that defense can waver a bit. Auburn must get yards around the perimeter of the field, but also between the tackles to soften the Landshark defense.

4.0: The number of yards per carry Ole Miss averaged in its loss at LSU. Auburn ranks sixth in the SEC in run defense, allowing just 120.4 yards per game. If the Tigers can hold Ole Miss’ ground game, that will put pressure on Bo Wallace to make plays. That also will force the Rebels into long down-and-distance situations, and they have struggled over the past two games with throws of greater than 15 yards down the field.

56: The percentage of third downs Auburn is converting this season, good for tops in the SEC. The Tigers were six of eight on third down chances in the win over South Carolina, and Auburn’s ability to move the chains and keep Ole Miss’ defense on the field could prove important.

The Bad:

0: The number of sacks registered by Auburn last week against South Carolina. Coaches said the pass rush was a big focus for the Tigers during its bye week prior, but that was to no avail. The offensive line has been a question mark for Ole Miss, and if Auburn can muster a way to get pressure on Wallace, he can be forced into some bad decisions.

3/4: The Tigers’ and Rebels’ rankings in the first College Football Playoff poll. With both teams having already suffered a loss, Saturday night’s contest is essentially an elimination game, and the loser will be relegated to minimizing the damage and salvaging a New Year’s Day bowl. The winner, however, will be in the driver’s seat moving forward.

13: The number of interceptions Auburn has recorded this season. Jonathan Jones leads the Tigers with five picks; Auburn has to win the turnover battle on Saturday night, in order to escape Vaught-Hemingway Stadium with a win. “Bad Bo” reappeared last week in the Rebels’ loss at LSU. Auburn better hope he comes out this week, too.
