In preparation for Saturday’s matchup between South Carolina and Auburn, Saturday Down South is taking a look at the key matchups that may decide the showdown between the Gamecocks and Tigers.

Auburn run defense vs. South Carolina RB Mike Davis

It’s another week in the SEC, and yet again Auburn faces a great running back. South Carolina tailback Mike Davis comes to the Plains just two weeks removed from a career performance at Kentucky when he rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries.

Auburn boasts the SEC’s sixth-ranked rush defense, surrendering just 120.7 yards per game to its opponents. Its front seven has been very good and stuffing the run, with tackles Gabe Wright and Montravius Adams having very good years. Linebackers Cassanova McKinzy and Kris Frost also have been key to the Tigers’ success stopping the run.

Davis, however, is a sizable back who is very good between the tackles and possesses the speed to breakaway in the second level. The Gamecocks are averaging more than 185 yards per game on the ground, good for seventh in the league. When Davis is able to run the football effectively, South Carolina’s offense is as good as any with its potent passing attack.

Auburn used its bye week to make changes defensively, in hopes to generate a more productive pass rush. But its ability to stop the run will be key to slowing down Steve Spurrier’s offense.
