Here’s some of the highlights from what the Auburn Tigers had to say inside — and outside — the main ballroom Monday at the Wynfrey Hotel at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama:

Gus Malzahn

On offensive tempo:

“You look now at pace. Just about everybody in our league has some type of tempo, even the teams that used to gripe about it are actually doing it now.

On getting back to work soon for fall practice:

“Very excited about this team. We have some experience back in some areas, we’ve got some young talented guys to combine that with. Really looking froward to getting on the practice field and seeing what this team can do.”

On trying to re-establish playing physical:

“That physical, hit-you-in-the-mouth hard edge that Auburn’s been known for winning championships. Will (Muschamp) believes in that. We went live as much as we could in the spring and we’re on our way back to getting that.”

Will the offense change under Jeremy Johnson?

“We always build our offense around our quarterback’s strengths. Jeremy Johnson can flat out throw the football. We decided we didn’t run him last year when we played him because we had Nick Marshall. But he’s a very good runner in the zone read, good in the power read and can make all the throws. He’s got a lot of reps with the 1s, which I think helps him, so he’s a littlre more mature than a lot of guys that are making their first start as far as the whole season is concerned.”

On DE Carl Lawson’s return:

“Carl Lawson is back 100 percent and that’s a good thing. Last year if you looked at our major problems, it was putting pressure on the passer. To have a great defense, you’ve got to be able to put pressure on the quarterback rushing four. He’s definitely going to really help in that area this year.

Jeremy Johnson, Jr., QB

On the importance of last season’s experience as Nick Marshall’s backup:

“It’s very valuable. The first game (Arkansas) last season made me realize that I could play at this level. I was blessed to have that opportunity to play in the first game.”

On preseason Heisman expectations:

“My main focus right now is to get better each and every game. All the individual accolades will come with winning. I only can control what I can control.”

Jonathan Jones, Jr., DB

On surpassing last season’s team-leading INT total of 6:

“My goal this fall is to not give up any completions (laughs). If that includes more inerceptions, then that’s always a part of it. My first job is to make sure they don’t complete the ball and I definitely want to improve on that and not step backwards.”

Kris Frost, Sr., LB

On Muschamp’s arrival as defensive coordinator:

“It’s a different atmosphere at practice as far as our defense is concerned. We’re all excited. We feel like (he) has given us a new breath of life, everything’s so positive. I’ve never seen everything so positive before, you know, circling around the defense and the team as a whole. We’re really pumped up about starting the season and we know it’s going to be a good one.”
