While on WNSP in Mobile, Alabama, with Kevin Scarbinksy, former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said he was disappointed at some of the administration for not recognizing the 2004 team as national champions.

If you’ll remember an Auburn committee recently studied whether or not to recognize more national championships aside from the 1957 and 2010 teams. The committee concluded it would not recognize the 1910, 1913, 1914, 1983, 1993 and 2004 teams as national champions.

That didn’t sit too well with Tuberville, the coach of the undefeated 13-0 ’04 team. The Tigers finished ranked second behind USC, who beat Oklahoma in the BCS National Championship Game. The Trojans later had their championship vacated because of the violations of Reggie Bush.

“I don’t know why that (2004 Auburn) team wouldn’t be recognized,” Tuberville told Scarbinksy. “USC beat Oklahoma handily. We finished undefeated and they caught USC with their hand in the cookie jar and took the (BCS) title away from them. I never could understand why they just vacated it instead of saying, ‘We’re going to name another champion.'”

“Little disappointed with some of the administration there at Auburn that didn’t help us with that. They could’ve stepped up and said, ‘Hey, since that happened, we’re going to recognize the 2004 team as national champions.’ A lot of people would’ve done that because we did all we could do. We took care of business.

“But it is what it is and that team will be recognized, no matter how they phrase it, whether it’s as national champions or not, as one of the best (teams) to ever play at Auburn.”
