The Florida Gators kick off their season in two days against the Idaho Vandals, but its safe to say Idaho is not a team most Florida faithful would claim to know a lot about.

Have no fear, Florida fans. Saturday Down South has got you covered about the Idaho players you need to know when the two teams take the field Saturday night in The Swamp.

RB Richard Montgomery

The 5-foot-8, 163-pound sophomore may be small, but he’s the dynamic playmaker for the Idaho offense. He found a role during his freshman season as the team’s primary returner, but his flashes of big-play ability shined through when he was given the opportunity.

“He claims to run a 4.29 40-yard dash and it’s become hard to keep track of where he lines up when Idaho is on offense,” said Theo Lawson, Vandals beat writer for The Lewiston Tribune. “They call him a scatback and he reminds me a lot of ex-Oregon RB De’Anthony Thomas.

This season, Montgomery should expect to get the ball more often in the Vandals offense. His shiftiness and ability to make plays in open space will keep the Gators on their toes when he’s on the field. If left unchecked, Montgomery is a player that can make the defense pay.

In addition to his physical skills, Montgomery enters this game with a chip on his shoulder. A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Montgomery grew up rooting for the Gators, but during his recruitment Florida passed over him. You can bet he’ll be looking to show the Gators what they missed out on.

DT Quayshawne Buckley

Easily the best defensive player for the Vandals, Buckley returns after a breakout junior season. He led the team with seven sacks and 16 tackles for loss, all while recording 46 tackles.

Buckley is a massive man at 6-foot-3, 305-pounds and he’ll really test the middle of the Florida offensive line. He’s an experienced defensive lineman and Buckley will be hungry to make a lasting impression on the big stage of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

DT Alphonso Hampton

Alphonso Hampton is a newcomer to the Idaho Vandals by way of Southwestern College. If you thought Buckley was big, wait until you see Hampton. The 6-foot-5 tackle weighs in at a “puny” 345 pounds.

Hampton’s story is certainly unique. He didn’t play football until he enrolled at Southwestern College, which was five years after he graduated high school. He’s come a long way in just two years of competitive football and Hampton’s expected to make an even bigger jump as a junior.

Petrino will is planning on exposing the Florida offensive line and pressuring Driskel early and often. Pairing him and Buckley will be a big part of that gameplan with their combined 650 pounds pressuring the line.

QB Chad Chalich

The Vandals plan on playing two quarterbacks against the Gators on Saturday, but Chad Chalich could potentially provide some issues for the Florida defense.

Chalich comes in after starting at quarterback last year as a redshirt freshman. His season totals of 1,224 passing yards and five touchdowns were skewed by a season-ending shoulder injury he suffered after seven games. Florida will need to be aware of both his arm and his legs as Chalich can beat defenses with his running ability.

He became one of just five Idaho quarterbacks to rush for 100 yards in a game, so when he’s in the game, expect Idaho to showcase his dual-threat abilities.
