Will Muschamp’s calculated words played over and over on SportsCenter in December.

When Muschamp gave his resignation at the University of Florida, he reminded everyone that the Gators’ roster was loaded and that the ‘new guy’ — now Jim McElwain — wouldn’t have any reason to complain about what he inherited.

“They’ve got a deep and talented roster, so don’t let that new guy tell you he ain’t got any players,” Muschamp said. “I can tell you that right now. There are some good football players in that locker room.”

While McElwain may agree with that statement, the roster isn’t exactly deep and talented like Muschamp expressed, at least at every position.

While meeting with the media Friday, McElwain expounded on the lack of depth at two positions, according to 247Sports.

“You’ve got to play the hand you’re dealt,” McElwain said. “And right now, quite honestly, the hand we were dealt is really insufficient at some of the areas.”

McElwain singles out two positions: offensive line and linebackers. The Gators have just eight scholarship offensive linemen this spring, and the linebacker position is really thin, especially since Antonio Morrison is missing spring practice with an injury.

“It’s hard. Like I said, it hurts the whole team [lack of depth],” McElwain said. “Just like the short numbers are on linebackers as well. We’re awful short there as well, and yet it’s something we know. There’s nothing we can do about it.”

McElwain is managing the lack of depth as best as he can, and he’s making no excuses for it. But the reality is he can sell playing time to prospects immediately.
