This is part of a daily series this week on each SEC team’s bowl possibilities and likely destination in prep for Sunday’s College Football Bowl Selection Show.

It wasn’t supposed to end like that.

The final weekend of the regular season was a nightmare for Georgia, a team expected to contend for a division — and possibly, national — championship this fall.

Mizzou’s win over Arkansas the day after Thanksgiving meant the Bulldogs missed out on a trip to Atlanta. The next day made it even worse after Georgia dropped its home finale to Georgia Tech, snapping a five-year winning streak in the rivalry series.

The loss will ultimately keep the Bulldogs out of a New Year’s Six bowl and warm the seat beneath longtime coach Mark Richt who routinely posts nine-win seasons, but has just two conference titles since 2001.

“It’s hard to sit here and act all giddy about what happened,” Richt said of this season according to The Ledger-Enquirer. “I mean we want to win the East and win the SEC. And we want to be a team competing and winning some national championships. Obviously there were some things that were a little different that we had to manage.”

Recent Georgia bowl history

  • 2009: Independence Bowl — vs. Texas A&M, 44-20, Win
  • 2010: Liberty Bowl — vs. UCF, 10-6, Loss
  • 2011: Outback Bowl — vs. Michigan State, 33-30, Loss
  • 2012: Capital One Bowl — vs. Nebraska, 45-31, Win
  • 2013: Gator Bowl — vs. Nebraska, 24-19, Loss

Possible bowl destinations

There’s a faint chance the College football Playoff selection committee still sends Georgia to Atlanta for the Peach Bowl, but Ole Miss jumped ahead of the Bulldogs in the at-large pecking order after last weekend’s result. It appears Richt’s team could fall anywhere from Central Florida to Nashville (Music City bowl) with no in-between. A 34-point win at Mizzou earlier this season could come into play should the Tigers finish with three losses following Saturday’s SEC Championship Game. Bulldogs fans are are more likely to attend another Florida-based bowl game than those in Missouri.

Final bowl pairings will be announced on Sunday.
