This is part of a daily series this week on each SEC team’s bowl possibilities and likely destination in prep for Sunday’s College Football Bowl Selection Show.

South Carolina’s heading back to the postseason, but the Gamecocks’ bowl placement might not be what they had envisioned.

The media’s preseason pick to win the East is just happy to get to this point with another game on the table, a season marred by defensive lapses and inconsistent play up front.

South Carolina’s (6-6) shot at a ‘pool of six’ game — Outback, TaxSlayer, Music City, Liberty, Belk and Texas Bowls — is slim following last weekend’s loss at Clemson. The Gamecocks have no momentum heading into the postseason but are going bowling for a school record seventh straight season.

That’s enough reason to go try and win another according to Steve Spurrier.

“I told the guys, 6-6 might be what we are … we’re bowl eligible, 6-6,” Spurrier said after a disappointing setback at Clemson. “Obviously we could’ve won some and we could’ve lost some we won. So maybe we just say this is where we are and try to win us a bowl game, simple as that.”

Possible bowl destinations

Anywhere but Birmingham. Legion Field brings back bad memories for the Gamecocks, the chilling site of an anemic offensive performance during a 2009 Papa Johns Bowl loss to UConn. At kickoff, the temperature hovered around 28 degrees and never got warmer as the game progressed.

The TaxSlayer Gator Bowl was thought to be a possible landing spot prior to Saturday’s loss at Clemson, but a seventh win was needed to improve overall value. South Carolina’s played in — and won — Florida-based bowl games each of the last three seasons against Big Ten competition.

Bowl matchups will be announced on Sunday.
