Georgia is continuing to explore the possibility of adding an experienced quarterback to the competition this fall.

According to the Athens Banner-Herald, the Bulldogs have received permission from Virginia to talk to quarterback Greyson Lambert.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Lambert served as a team captain for the Cavaliers last season, missing three games due to injury and starting nine.

Lambert, a native of Jesup, Ga., completed 59 percent of his passes last season, throwing 10 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. Virginia’s post-spring depth chart listed him as the No. 2 quarterback, and he’s set to graduate with a degree in anthropology.

Lambert retains two seasons of eligibility remaining and no disciplinary issues, so he wouldn’t require a waiver from the SEC commissioner should he transfer to UGA.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, who since has transferred to Florida State, reportedly visited Georgia before making his decision, though coach Mark Richt declined to confirm that.

This week at the SEC meetings, commissioner Mike Slive revealed that he had “conversations” with a few teams about Golson, though no program ever requested a transfer waiver. Slive said he simply reminded the teams of the SEC rules.

Georgia, Alabama, LSU and Clemson are among the schools who offered Lambert a scholarship out of high school. Former Bulldogs offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, now head coach at Colorado State, reportedly has expressed interest in Lambert as well, according to the Newport News Daily Press.

“I haven’t visited Georgia. I haven’t visited anywhere,” Lambert said Friday, according to DawgPost.com. “The situation (transfer options) is going well, but I don’t want to speak about it. I don’t want there to be any fuss over anything. All that other stuff is noise.”

Redshirt sophomore Brice Ramsey is the favorite to become Georgia’s starting quarterback this season, though the athletic Faton Bauta has made improvement as a thrower and has pushed Ramsey. The position will get a lot of attention this fall, especially since Georgia is considered the early SEC East favorite.

Lambert’s yards per attempt and interception rate at Virginia were pretty ugly. But he did complete a high percentage of his passes, and the former four-star quarterback has the size and arm talent to start in the SEC.

It’s unclear how interested Georgia is, but it’s unlikely the team would take the necessary steps to contact Lambert if the Bulldogs aren’t at least entertaining the idea. At this point if Lambert did transfer to UGA, he’d be scrambling to overtake Ramsey and Bauta on the depth chart.
