The Kentucky Wildcats are riding high after recording their first SEC victory in three years last weekend, and the Cats will try and keep the momentum going this weekend in a showdown with unranked South Carolina.

The Gamecocks sit outside the polls for the first time since Sept. 2, 2010 — snapping a school record of 69 straight weeks in the rankings — and they’ve stumbled to a 1-2 start in the SEC this season. At 1-1 in conference play, Kentucky actually sits above South Carolina in the current SEC East standings, so a win Saturday would be huge for the Wildcats in their rebuilding process under Mark Stoops.

Stoops released an updated depth chart in advance of Saturday’s game, and it looked more or less like the depth chart he released last Monday before the game against Vanderbilt. The only glaring change to the depth chart comes at left guard, where Nick Haynes is listed as the starter ahead of Cole Mosier and Zach West. West was the original starter at left guard when the season began, but he’s battled neck stiffness an missed Kentucky’s last two games.

Mosier stepped in at left guard against Florida prior to UK’s bye week, but he was replaced by Haynes in last week’s win over Vandy. Stoops did admit both Mosier and West should see time against South Carolina on Saturday.

“We anticipate they’ll be out there at some time this week and helping us,” Stoops said Monday.

Also on the injury front, wideouts Alex Montgomery and Jeff Badet continue to battle injuries, and according to Stoops their status for this weekend remains “doubtful.” Neither has made an appearance for Kentucky so far this season, and Stoops told the media he’s considered redshirting both players if they can’t get back on the field.

“We’re in that range right now,” Stoops told Cats’ Illustrated’s Jon Hale Monday. “Because we’re better, we’re better at that area. If they’re not 100 percent, then the other guys can handle it. We need them back. We want them back. We need them both back at 100 percent.”

Without Montgomery and Badet the team has still managed to complete passes to 15 different pass catchers, six of whom are true freshmen.

The only other updates to the depth chart came on special teams. Freshman Matt Howard was listed as the team’s backup long snapper for the first time this season, and backup quarterback Reese Phillips was listed as the team’s alternate holder. However, considering the Cats’ primary holder — Jared Leet — does not have any other role on the team, it seems unlikely Phillips would ever be called upon to fill a void holding place kicks.
