There was some brilliant quarterback play this past weekend and some guys put up career-best numbers.

Out of everything I saw, one throw, or “seed,” as I like to call them, stuck out most.

For the record, my teammates, coaches and I at South Carolina always referenced a pinpoint throw as a “seed.”

During the Mississippi State-Kentucky game, we saw Patrick Towles emerge as one of the SEC’s best passers. One pass in particular stood out to me, and that is why he wins my inaugural “Seed of the Week.”

With the game looking like it might get out of hand in the middle of the third quarter, Towles hit Javess Blue on a 58-yard pass to bring the Wildcats back within seven points. Patty Ice read the defense to perfection and the team had a smart play call.

Mississippi State’s defense was in a “Tampa 2” coverage, which means they had two safeties covering the deep sidelines and the middle linebacker covering deep middle.

The Wildcats offensive line gave Towles plenty of time to read the coverage and he delivered a seed to Blue right over the middle linebacker as he raced into the end zone.

As a quarterback, my personal-favorite throws are the deep ones across the middle that hit receivers in stride. There are not a whole lot of plays in sports that are as pretty as a receiver running under a deep spiraling pass.

It’s a combination of everyone doing their job. It starts with the perfect play call and requires great blocking up front, a good read and a great throw by the quarterback, and finally the receiver running his route full speed and securing the catch.
