For the first time in nearly 100 years, an LSU game has been cancelled.

The Tigers’ opening-night tilt with McNeese State was halted less than five minutes into the game when lightning was detected near the stadium. The ugly weather never relented, and after more than three and half hours of the delays, the game was called off. It will not be made up.

It’s a tough break for an LSU team breaking in a new starting quarterback and preparing for a date at Mississippi State on Saturday.

Against McNeese State, both teams got one possession. Leonard Fournette recorded two carries for 11 yards, but the Tigers’ drive fizzled soon after. Brandon Harris, making his second career start, attempted two passes. The first, a screen to freshman running back Derrius Guice, was stuffed for a loss of 4 yards. The second, a deep ball intended for Malachi Dupre on third and long, fell incomplete.

The LSU defense held McNeese to a three-and-out on its only possession.

The Tigers will take on Mississippi State at 9:15 p.m. EST Saturday. The game will be televised by ESPN.
