After a two-week search, LSU brought in a defensive coordinator on Tuesday when they hired Kevin Steele away from Alabama. Now, it appears one of the many names bandied about during the search will be joining the staff as well.

According to a report from FootballScoop.com, Ed Orgeron will join LSU’s staff on Wednesday. While Orgeron’s role is initially unclear, the former Ole Miss head coach and Southern California interim coach has spent much of his career coaching defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator.

Adding Orgeron would be a major boost to LSU’s recruiting. Steele is considered one of the top recruiters in the SEC, and Orgeron carries a similar reputation as one of the best. Adding the two defensive coaches in with ace recruiter Frank Wilson, LSU’s running backs coach, gives the Tigers a potent trio of recruiters on the coaching staff.

Orgeron’s reported hiring raises questions about current LSU defensive line coach Brick Haley’s future. Haley was considered for a promotion to defensive coordinator, and was passed over in favor of Steele, although there have been reports that Haley recommended Steele for the job. Haley was initially expected to follow former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis to Texas A&M. A report from Tiger Sports Digest indicated that Orgeron will replace Haley as defensive line coach.
