Mississippi State has a chance to state their case for the College Football Playoff committee in this year’s Egg Bowl as they face off against No. 19 Ole Miss.

Here’s a look at some of the interesting statistics heading into this year’s matchup.

THE GOOD

  • 4-1. Dan Mullen is off to a pretty good start in the Egg Bowl rivalry. He won his first three games against the Rebels, and has run his record against them to 4-1 in his first five years in Starkville. Last year’s win at home was huge, as it propelled the Bulldogs to bowl eligibility.
  • -6. Ole Miss is one of the best teams in the nation at taking the ball away from their opponents, but they’ve been coughing it up themselves at an alarming rate. The Rebels have a minus-6 turnover margin in three November games, which includes six turnovers last week against Arkansas.
  • 39. The Bulldogs are posting 39 points per game this season, good for 12th-best in the country. Ole Miss’ offense, meanwhile, has been struggling ever since star receiver Laquon Treadwell was lost to injury. Bo Wallace was banged up during last week’s shutout loss, and Ole Miss is going to struggle to keep up if the Bulldogs come anywhere close to their usual production.

THE BAD

  • 130.9. Ole Miss is one of the stingiest defenses in the country, and they rank 28th in run defense with just 130.9 yards allowed per game. The Bulldogs have only been held below 200 yards twice this season, and both games were battles: a 17-10 win over Arkansas and their 25-20 loss to Alabama.
  • 3. Dak Prescott has had some issues throwing interceptions this year with 10 total picks and 8 INT in SEC play. That’s bad news against the Rebels. Ole Miss’ defense is third in the country in interceptions, with 19 on the year. They’re led by Senquez Golson’s 9 INT; Golson will spend much of his day on State’s top receiver De’Runnya Wilson.
  • 5-20. Under Mullen, the Bulldogs don’t have a great track record against ranked opponents. They’re just 5-20 against them since 2009, and just 3-7 in ranked vs. ranked games. Three of Mississippi State’s wins over ranked teams have come this season, so you might be able to throw history out the windeow with this Bulldogs team.
