MISSOURI SOPHOMORE QB MATY MAUK

Stats: 209-of-395, 52.9 percent, 2,551 passing yards, 23 passing TDs, 11 INTs, 20 sacks, 120.8 rating

Big-time game: The game at Toledo was by far his best game. Mauk went 21-of-32 for 325 yards in the air. He threw for five touchdowns and ran for another one. That was the Maty Mauk that everyone expected to see throughout this season. I believe that we will see more of that guy next year.

Not his best effort: When the Georgia Bulldogs came into Columbia, it was a rough day for Mauk and the Missouri offense. Mauk went 9-of-21 for 97 yards with zero touchdowns and four picks. They lost 34-0 at home and Mauk struggled big-time. The Bulldogs defense really controlled the line of scrimmage and Mauk had a hard time completing passes to his team.

Improvements: He needs to improve on his pocket passing. There is no doubt that Mauk is one of the best throwers in the nation while on the run, but you can’t win forever doing that. He is definitely athletic and can make all the throws. He needs to improve on his pocket presence and be less turnover prone.

Strengths: He’s definitely one of the most athletic guys under center in the SEC. Mauk will have an offseason under his belt leading into next year and I think he will become more comfortable in the pocket. Look for him to do big things in 2015. His ability to scramble and throw on the run is Mauk’s biggest asset. I would like to see him improve as a pocket passer, but as far as making plays, this guy is one of the better ones in the SEC.

Weakness: Pocket presence. He has to improve in this area. I think he’s a very talented quarterback and has the ability to make all the throws. That is a fixable trait. That said, you don’t want to take away his ability to scramble and run around.

Overall: I think that Mauk has the talent both passing and running, which he showed last year and parts of this year. However, he struggled often this year. He’s a gamer and a very talented player and I believe next year he will flourish. This was his first year as the full-time starter and he has plenty of time to grow. I bet he’ll be one of the best next year.
