This is part of a daily series this week on each SEC team’s bowl possibilities and likely destination in prep for Sunday’s College Football Bowl Selection Show.

Unexpectedly, Ole Miss is back in the mix for a non-semifinal New Year’s Six bowl invite, a possibility that didn’t seem feasible prior to last weekend’s Egg Bowl victory which snapped a stretch of three losses over the Rebels’ previous four games.

Ole Miss is an attractive nine-win team that always travels and at one point this season, was unbeaten and ranked No. 3 in the nation. The Rebels climbed seven spots on Tuesday night and are now ranked 12th just behind Mississippi State (10th). Both could grab coveted New Year’s Six spots if the College Football Playoff committee keeps those two on Sunday after championship weekend is over.

The committee will pick six at-large teams — from any conference — once the highest-ranked non-Power 5 selection is made along with the Power 5 champion that is not currently in the Playoff (Ohio State) to fill eight slots.

Ole Miss has won six consecutive bowl games dating back to 2002.

Recent Ole Miss bowl history

  • 2003: Cotton Bowl — vs. Oklahoma State, 31-28, Win
  • 2008: Cotton Bowl — vs. Texas Tech, 47-34, Win
  • 2009: Cotton Bowl — vs. Oklahoma State, 21-7, Win
  • 2012: Compass Bowl — vs. Pittsburgh, 38-17, Win
  • 2013: Music City Bowl — vs. Georgia Tech, 25-17, Win

Possible bowl destinations

Peach Bowl or bust! Ole Miss is very much in play for a New Year’s Six bid with a strong finish in the Egg Bowl, strengthening the Rebels’ case in the latest Playoff rankings. If Ole Miss isn’t selected to play in this year’s ‘replacement BCS’ games, another possible landing spot is Orlando for the Citrus Bowl or Tampa in the Outback. Both of those bowl games would love the Rebels and likely economic impact brought by an energized fanbase, but the selection committee will have the ultimate say on whether Ole Miss is available to choose from once New Year’s Six slots are filled.

Final bowl pairings will be announced on Sunday.
