If you were hoping SEC Media Days would provide an insight into who the Ole Miss starting quarterback will be this fall, you are likely to be disappointed.

After graduating a three-year starter at quarterback in Bo Wallace, the most popular question Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze faced on Thursday was about his ongoing competition to find a replacement.

The Rebels began a three-man competition in the spring that included sophomores Ryan Buchanan and DeVante Kincade, as well as junior college transfer Chad Kelly.

“I’m really excited about all three,” Freeze said during his appearance on the SEC Network set. “I think they all have earned the right to compete for the job. And two have been with us for two years, so I think they have a slight edge on Chad (Kelly) who has only had 15 days with us. But I have been very impressed with his football IQ and the way he has gone about his business in preparing.”

Freeze was again pressed for an answer about the quarterback situation while addressing the media as the final coach to take the podium at the four-day event in Hoover, Ala.

“I don’t think there’s a fair sampling yet for any of the three,” Freeze said. “And that’s why I won’t put myself in a box on when that decision will be made. I think all three have earned the right to compete for it. I said after spring I thought Ryan (Buchanan) was a little ahead of the other two, but the margin was so small it could be overcome.”

Freeze admitted that the competition could stretch into the regular season, with the possibility of the Rebels using multiple quarterbacks until one gets an upper hand on the competition.

“It may be two weeks into fall camp that its obvious, or it may be two games into the season before (a decision) is made,” Freeze said. “But I’m not going to put myself into a box on that. I really want to evaluate and give them each a fair chance to see who is most efficient in leading our offense.”

Buchanan and Kincade both have limited SEC experience from their freshman seasons, when they combined to attempt 42 passes as back-ups to Wallace in 2014.

The wild card in the situation is Kelly, who is the nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly. The former Clemson quarterback put up big numbers in junior college play, but has been plagued with issues off the field.

“Before we signed him I wasn’t in a negotiating mood,” Freeze said. “It was very cut and dry. I think the platform that I’ve been giving is to help young men navigate life. And if I believe there is a redeeming quality left, I tend to lean toward trying to use my platform to help them. I was very clear with him that there was no room for any mistakes outside of the normal ones that we all make.”

Freeze said he wanted to try to help Kelly “rewrite his story,” and to this point he believes Kelly is on board with trying to turn his career around in what is likely a last chance at redemption.

“To this point he has done everything we’ve asked him to do and even more,” Freeze said. “I’ve been very pleased with his progress thus far.”
