No. 4 Ole Miss is coming off its first loss with all its goals still in tact. The Rebels return home to face No. 3 Auburn Saturday night.

Let’s take a look inside some of the numbers of the Rebels 7-1 start.

The Good

10.5: The number of points per game Ole Miss’ defense is allowing. The Landsharks are the nation’s top-ranked scoring defense, however one of college football’s most high-powered offenses comes calling this week. Auburn is averaging nearly 40 points per game; Ole Miss has had some success against tempo teams, but has spent a lot of time on the field. The Rebels will need to hold Auburn to around 20 points, in order to win the game.

17: The number of interceptions the Rebels have recorded this season. Cornerback Senquez Golson has a team-high eight picks. When pressured, Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall can be forced into some mistakes and he has not faced a secondary as active and with as good of ball skills as Ole Miss’ possesses.

55/18: The number of tackles for loss and sacks recorded by the Rebels. It’s key that Ole Miss keep Auburn behind schedule on offense. When the Tigers get behind the chains on second and third downs, they struggle and that will allow the Landshark defense to feast.

The Bad

3.9: The number of yards per carry Ole Miss is averaging on the ground. It’s been a running back-by-committee approach for Hugh Freeze, but the Rebels are so one-dimensional on offense. We saw in the loss at LSU last week how bad that offense can be without the threat of a running game, especially when Bo Wallace has a bad game.

24:00: The Rebels’ time of possession Saturday night in the loss to LSU. The Bayou Bengals won the time of possession by nine minutes. Ole Miss needs to win the time of possession battle against Auburn; its defense can’t afford to spend any more time on the field.

42: The percentage of third downs on which Ole Miss is converting, that’s near the bottom of the SEC. The Rebels were just five of 17 on third downs in the loss to LSU. Wallace and company need to extend drives and stay on the field when it has chances.
