Will Gleeson had never played a down of American football in his life when he stepped on the field inside the Georgia Dome as Ole Miss’ punter last Thursday night.

No matter, Gleeson booted four booming punts in his debut for the Rebels, totaling 189 yards, an average of 47.3 yards per punt. He landed three of his kicks inside the Boise State 20, and even had one punt travel 70 yards, dramatically altering the field position battle in a one possession game at the time.

Gleeson was honored Tuesday as the National Punter of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards, and was named Ray Guy Player of the Week by the Augusta Sports Council and the Ray Guy Award, given annually to the nation’s best punter.

A native of Melbourne, Australia, Gleeson grew up playing Australian rules football, but came to America last year to play American football in the SEC. He redshirted the 2013 season but has won the job outright in 2014.
