12: An SEC team has appeared at No. 1 in a preseason poll 12 times. Alabama leads with four appearances, followed by Florida’s three. Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee have each topped the preseason poll once.

Alabama was also the most recent SEC team to earn preseason No. 1 honors in 2013.

743: Speaking of Alabama, it has spent 743 weeks ranked in the AP Poll since 1936, which is also the most among SEC teams and fifth among FBS teams. LSU ranks 10th among FBS teams with 575 total appearances

8: Alabama and Florida have been ranked in the top 5 of the preseason AP eight times since 1996, which is the most among SEC teams and tied for second in the FBS. Oklahoma leads all teams with nine such appearances. Tennessee and LSU have each made the top 5 five times, while Georgia has three times. Auburn was ranked in the preseason top 5 once in that span.

10: Just because a team starts at No. 1 doesn’t mean it will finish there. Since 1936, only 10 teams have finished at No. 1 overall after starting as the preseason No. 1. USC was the last team to start and end the season at the top of the AP Poll in 2007. Alabama was the last SEC team to accomplish that feat in 1978. It’s even less likely to hold on to the No. 1 spot throughout the entire season.

2: Only two teams have gone wire-to-wire as the top-ranked team in college football: Florida State in 1999 and USC in 2004. Six other teams missed the the wire-to-wire No. 1 ranking by one missed poll. None are SEC teams.

19: The SEC has had at least five teams ranked in the preseason AP poll 19 times over the past 20 years. The only exception was 2003, when four teams made the top 25. Florida received the most votes of any unranked team.

273: Florida leads all SEC teams with 273 total AP Poll appearances since 1996, which is second among FBS teams. LSU is second among SEC teams with 272 and Georgia is third with 251.
