The Business People Who Have Impacted Your Life

31. Jimmy Wales, attended both Auburn and Alabama

If you use the internet, there’s a high probability that you’ve been to Wikipedia, the internet’s free encyclopedia. The website is one of the largest websites on the internet and is operated on a budget that is a fraction of comparable websites. This is due to the volunteer-based model that has built Wikipedia. Not only has Wales led a revolution in the spreading of freely available knowledge, but he’s an innovator with regards to organizational models.

30. Sam Walton, University of Missouri

Walton began with a single store in 1950 and opened his first Walmart in 1962. His focus on logistics enabled his business to expand rapidly from 190 stores in 1977 to 800 in 1985. Walmart is one of the largest companies in the world today with stores throughout the United States and around the globe.

The Purveyor of False Hope Group

29. Chris Moneymaker, University of Tennessee

When Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker in 2003, he became the first winner who gained entry via an online poker tournament. The combination of the spreading belief that an average Joe could win the biggest poker tournament in the world with the introduction of online poker platforms that allowed college kids to play hundreds of hands a night from their dorm rooms launched a poker boom. Moneymaker was a big part of that boom because of this moment:

The Guys Who Dominate Sports With Billions of Dollars

28. Robert C McNair, University of South Carolina

The 1958 graduate made billions in business and brought an NFL team to the city of Houston, Texas in 1999. With his hands full with multiple businesses and the Houston Texans franchise, McNair has still made attempts to grow his empire via recent bids for professional soccer teams.

27. E. Stanley Kroenke, University of Missouri

Stan Kroenke makes McNair look like an amateur with regards to owning professional sports teams. Kroenke owns the NFL’s St. Louis Rams, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, an MLS team and a professional lacrosse team. Kroenke also is the largest shareholder in the English soccer team Arsenal. Kroenke has been in the news recently for being involved in moving the St. Louis Rams to Los Angeles. While Kroenke was wealthy on his own, he married Ann Walton, the daughter of Wal-Mart co-founder Bud Walton and thus inherited a stake in Wal-Mart estimated to be worth $6 billion.

26. Jerry Jones, University of Arkansas

The controversial owner of the Dallas Cowboys is one of the biggest names in American sports. Jones played on the 1964 Arkansas Razorbacks national championship team along with Jimmy Johnson. He purchased the Dallas Cowboys franchise in 1989 and replaced coach Tom Landry with longtime friend Jimmy Johnson. Jones’ Cowboys won three Super Bowls in the 1990s but have struggled to compete for championships since.

The Beloved Characters Group

25. Michael Oher, University of Mississippi

Oher wasn’t an actor, but the actual person behind the character in the hit book and movie the Blind Side that put Mississippi football in front of the entire world. Oher played for Hugh Freeze in high school and of course was adopted by the Tuohy family before playing football at Ole Miss and then becoming a 1st round NFL Draft Pick.

24. Tom Berenger, University of Missouri

Sergeant Barnes from Platoon won some awards, but I’m more interested in the performance as Jake Taylor in Major League.

23. Jon Hamm, University of Missouri

The St. Louis native moved to Los Angeles in the 1990s to live with buddy Paul Rudd and struggled for years to find traction as an actor. In 2007, Hamm became a household name with his role as Don Draper in AMC’s hit show Mad Men. Since, Hamm has had roles in major movies such as The Town and Million Dollar Arm.

22. Kyle Chandler, University of Georgia

Mostly known for his role as coach Eric Taylor on the fantastic television series Friday Night Lights, Chandler is one of those actors that will find it difficult escaping the iconic and beloved role from the high school football drama. However, I’ll admit, he did a nice job in recent Netflix original series Bloodline as John Rayburn.

The Notable Athletes Group

21. John Daly, University of Arkansas

“Long John” became the first PGA Tour member to average 300 yards per drive over the course of an entire golf season. He’s won two majors, and is one of the most well known golfers to this day.

20. Pistol Pete, Louisiana State University

LSU’s Pete Maravich remains one of the biggest basketball players of all-time. Maravich remains the all-time NCAA D-1 scorer with 3,667 points and an astounding average of 44.2 points per game. Maravich averaged 24.2 points per game in the NBA over ten seasons.

19. Lolo Jones, Louisiana State University

Lori “Lolo” Jones is an Olympic track and field (and bobsled) athlete from LSU. Her main events are the 60-meter and 100-meter hurdles where she has won a range of awards. Despite being a favorite in the 100-meter hurdles in the 2008 Olympics, Jones fell short when she hit the 9th hurdle. Jones failed to medal in the 2012 Olympics.

18. Billy Horschel, University of Florida

The up-and-coming professional golfer made news in 2014 when he won the end-of-season championship known as the FedEx Cup (which came with a nice $10 million prize). Horschel also made news when he gave his caddy a $1 million tip following his FedEx Cup win.

17. Abby Wambach, University of Florida

Abby Wambach has been the face of women’s soccer in the United States since Mia Hamm passed the torch several years ago. She was a three-time All American while playing for the Florida Gators and has won multiple gold medals in the Olympics. Wambach is still seeking her first World Cup championship and will likely make her last appearance in the event this summer.

16. Shaquille O’Neal, Louisiana State University

The larger than life Shaq is one of the most decorated NBA athletes of this generation. He was a 15-time NBA All-Star and four-time NBA Champion. Shaq averaged over 24 points per game in playoff games throughout his career. Of course, in addition to basketball, Shaq is a man of many talents. He has experience as a rapper, actor, and recently as an analyst on TNT broadcasts. Perhaps he’s best described as an entertainer. Whether it is tearing down basketball hoops as a result of violent dunks or cracking up the media during press conferences, Shaq is never boring.

15. Charles Barkley, Auburn University

Most Barkley fans today probably don’t realize how good he was during his prime as an athlete. The career 22.1 points per game and 11.2 rebounds per game NBA player won the MVP in 1993, was an 11-time All-Star and won Olympic gold medals in 1992 and 1996. Barkley has always been outspoken and has perhaps become even more popular as a broadcaster today than he was a basketball player. Whether he is commenting on analytics or social issues, when Barkley speaks… we listen.
