Not happy with a four-team Playoff?

More football is good, so we’ve decided to expand the season by several weeks with the introduction of the SDS 64, a ‘Winter Madness’ style tournament with an emphasis on conference championships, strength of schedule and any factors we see fit.

Each region has its own theme, dominant teams and laughable neutral site hosts. Hint: 12 SEC teams made the field.

THE SDS 64 SCHEDULE

  • TODAY: Phyllis Region
  • TUESDAY: Family Time Region
  • WEDNESDAY: Chrome Dome Region
  • THURSDAY: Crab Legs Region
  • Dec. 15: Round of 64 results
  • Dec. 16: Round of 32 results
  • Dec. 17: Round of 16 results
  • Dec. 18: Round of 8 results
  • Dec. 19: Final Four, Champion

Let’s kick things off with the Phyllis Region, an ode to Paul Finebaum’s most famous caller. All games will be held at dilapidated Legion Field (move aside Compass Bowl) and the host team UAB, a program that was given the ax last week, has been spotted a 17.5-point lead against top-seeded Alabama.

PHYLLIS

BREAKING DOWN THE PHYLLIS REGION

SEC teams: No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 LSU; Darkhorses: No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 6 Southern Cal; Betting favorites: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 TCU

Intriguing matchups: We’ll see if Alabama, facing a 17.5-point deficit at kickoff, has enough to overcome the emotional factor in its opening-round game against UAB. It could be a challenge for Nick Saban’s SEC champs who may get caught looking ahead to a possible second-round contest against Notre Dame. The Blazers are back on the field one final time and the SDS 64 Playoff committee has accepted UAB’s request to ban the Alabama Board of Trustees from attending.

Boise State, one of the tournament’s top teams outside the Power 5, must match Stanford’s physicality in the trenches during a 7/10 game. Stanford’s a dangerous team with seven wins and knocked off UCLA on the road by three touchdowns last time out.
