After the first college football weekend, I wonder what they’ve learned?

The College Football Playoff selection committee has been watching college football games since Thursday night, and they’ve seen three of the best teams in the country have three of the best wins in the country: Texas A&M, LSU and Georgia.

Obviously, Texas A&M’s win came against a conference foe, and they hung a 52 spot at Williams-Brice Stadium. Nobody expected Kevin Sumlin and Kenny Hill to go all Fun ‘N Gun on Steve Spurrier and light up the Carolina night. They did just that, and it was impressive. Hill crushed the storyline regarding the loss of Johnny Manziel, and Texas A&M’s defense, well, actually has a pulse. The Aggies just scored again, and they could turn the SEC West on its head.

LSU’s comeback against Wisconsin was beautiful, and it could have seemingly eliminated the Big Ten from College Football Playoff contention. Think about it. Without Braxton Miller, Ohio State will lose. Michigan State travels to Oregon this week, and Wisconsin already has a loss. Can you imagine the horror of blowing a 24-7 lead? The River Boat Gambler Les Miles’ call on the fake punt was massive, and it was the turning point in the game. No, LSU wasn’t the best team we saw all weekend, but they beat one of the best teams on opening weekend, including maybe the country’s top running back in Melvin Gordon and the Big Ten’s best team.

How impressive was Georgia’s win over Clemson? When was the last time you watched a Georgia game and came away thinking the Bulldogs executed their game plan to perfection? Exactly. They did just that Saturday night. With the big horse Todd Gurley breaking tackles like a peanut football game and Hutson Mason playing efficiently at quarterback, Georgia will be tough to beat, especially after the defense pitched a shutout in the second half. How about those halftime adjustments, Jeremy Pruitt? Clemson wasn’t even ranked as a top 15 team, but they may be a top 10-caliber team. Yes, Georgia wore them down in the second half, and that was the game plan executed to perfection.

So much has been made about how many SEC teams will make the College Football Playoff, and arguments have been made for either one, two and even none, but Texas A&M, LSU and Georgia were three of the most impressive teams to have three of the best wins in the country on opening weekend. Obviously, three SEC teams won’t make the playoff and a few will play themselves out of the playoff, but Florida State, LSU, Georgia and Texas A&M were the four most impressive teams in week one.
