Need star power?

LSU’s 2011 signing class had it, headlined by Zach Mettenberger and possible 2015 first-round picks La’el Collins and Jalen Collins. If you look closer though at the 23-member haul ranked eighth nationally by 247sports, the Tigers really flourished at wide receiver, bringing in the SEC’s best 1-2 punch of in-state talent in the BCS era.

All elements considered including NFL Draft selection, Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. exceeded expectations as sought-after prospects — quite a challenge in today’s recruiting coverage-heavy landscape where busts become just as recognizable as stars.

The pair combined for one of the most statistically-noteworthy seasons in SEC history during the 2013 campaign, the first time teammates have each exceeded 1,000 yards receiving during the BCS era. Nearly identical in size and skillset, Landry and Beckham finished with 136 total catches for 2,345 yards and 18 touchdowns as Mettenberger’s desired targets.

Both individual seasons rank inside the league’s Top 20 all-time for single-season yardage highs.

Landry, a five-star who blossomed into a second-round pick in 2014, became LSU’s formidable No. 1 by his junior season, earning All-SEC honors following a 77-catch, 1,193-yard slate. His 10 touchdowns ranked second only to Mike Evans and Dorial Green-Beckham’s 12 in league play.

Beckham has become the more well-known standout of the two thanks to a scintillating rookie season with the New York Giants. Despite missing the first four games of last season with a hamstring pull, Beckham was named the AP’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after catching 91 passes from Eli Manning for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns.

He obliterated several franchise and NFL records for a rookie in the process and became a social media sensation after making what some called the greatest touchdown catch of all time.
