Junior Day at South Carolina was a recruiting success for the Gamecocks last weekend after Steve Spurrier received verbal commitments from two future weapons on offense — four-star running back C.J. Freeman and three-star wideout Bryan Edwards.

Those commitments increased South Carolina’s verbal pledges to five for the 2016 class and pushed the Gamecocks into the Top 25 nationally in the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings. Wide receiver is a position group of extreme need for South Carolina and it appears the Gamecocks have addressed the situation in their 2015 class and blossoming 2016 group.

Holding onto four-star quarterback Brandon McIlwain is the primary goal for Spurrier and assistant coach G.A. Mangus as the recruiting season moves closer to February. McIlwain is the nation’s fourth-best dual-threat passer and committed to South Carolina on New Year’s Eve.

Rashan Gary, DT, Paramus, N.J. (five-star) — The Gamecocks are a long shot to land the nation’s top defender, but do have an edge a few other programs don’t — the 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive tackle has family ties to the Palmetto State according to reports. He’s expected to be on campus for an official visit today. Alabama, Rutgers and Michigan are Gary’s leaders as of now.

Brad Hawkins, WR, Camden, N.J. (four-star) — This sticky-handed wideout from New Jersey is a field-stretcher with great speed — an ideal big target for quarterbacks. South Carolina’s the favorite for Hawkins who also has offers from Michigan and Florida among several others. Spurrier and Mangus have been the pointmen in his recruitment and offered Hawkins a few weeks before Junior Day 2014 (which he attended).

Scott Lashley, OT, West Point, Miss. (four-star) — South Carolina offered this Mississippi State lean on March 21 and he would be a welcomed addition along the Gamecocks’ offensive front. He has attended Junior Day at Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi State this spring and has offers from each along with Florida State, Georgia and Auburn. At 6-foot-7, 300 pounds, Lashley possesses the tall, lean body coaches look for when recruiting cornerstone-caliber tackles.

Javon Kinlaw, OT, Goose Creek, S.C. (four-star) — It’s only a matter of time before Kinlaw commits to the Gamecocks according to several South Carolina recruiting insiders, but the coaching staff isn’t taking any chances, checking in on the talented tackle often over the last several months. On Jan. 31, Kinlaw attended Clemson’s Junior Day, but made a special stop in Columbia to visit with Steve Spurrier Jr. on his way home to Charleston.

Nyles Pinckney, DT, Seabrook, S.C. (four-star) — It’ll be quite a challenge, but South Carolina assistants Deke Adams and Everette Sands are trying their best to sway Pinckney away from Dabo Swinney and Clemson, his leader. The burly 285-pound nose guard made 22 tackles stops behind the line of scrimmage last season at Whale Branch Early College and is one of the top defensive line prospects in the Carolinas for the 2016 class.
