Steve Spurrier had plenty to say on the subject of retirement over the last week at SEC Media Days.

In commenting about his own future, Spurrier said that somebody should set odds for all of the SEC coaches on whether or not they’d be around in four years. After all, job security is no guarantee in the ultra-competitive SEC.

Since the Ol’ Ball Coach asked, we decided to huddle as a staff and create odds for Spurrier’s suggested scenario.

The following are odds for whether each coach will still be the coach of his respective program “four years from now,” or whether they will be at the 2019 SEC Media Days following the 2018 football season. These odds factor in retirement, quitting or being fired. The coach is either there or isn’t regardless of how the departure materializes.

The below odds can be understood as follows: 1/30 means you’d have to bet $30 to win $1, or in other words, there’s a very high likelihood of the event occurring (as such you can’t win much money betting on it to occur). Alternatively, 25/1 means you’d bet $1 to win $25, or the chances of the event occurring aren’t very high.

Won’t last long

Yes, it’s Vanderbilt, but Mason’s days are numbered in Nashville. They might have three head coaches between now and four years from now.

1/30 Derek Mason

Likely to retire at some point in next few years

Spurrier is 70. Saban is 63. Pinkel is 63. Spurrier is the most likely to retire within the next few years. Saban is more likely than Pinkel because his job is more stressful (higher expectations, more demanding fans).

1/25 Spurrier
1/1 Saban
2/3 Pinkel

Could retire, could get canned, could win a natty

Richt and Miles remain the wild cards in the SEC. Both lead elite programs with varying degrees of success from year to year. These guys could both be here in 2019, or they could both be gone.

1/3 Richt
1/3 Miles

How antsy will the fans get?

Stoops is considered to be doing a good job at Kentucky. But, winning is hard at Kentucky.

2/1 Stoops

Promising, but could be victim of rising expectations

Bielema, Sumlin and Jones are all on solid ground currently. But these fans bases want to win. It’s likely that one of the three at a minimum is gone in four years. Which one? Your guess is as good as mine.

3/1 Bielema
3/1 Sumlin
3/1 Butch Jones

I just have to do better than muschamp?

McElwain’s safe in Gainesville for four seasons, right?

5/1 McElwain

Young, with equity in the bank

You could argue that these three gentlemen are in it for the long haul. They’ve got their youth, and they’ve got job security.

10/1 Malzahn
10/1 Freeze
10/1 Mullen
