Steve Spurrier quit as coach at South Carolina. But the Gamecocks athletic department will pay him for the rest of the season, according to The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper.

South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner gave no specific reasons why Spurrier would continue to be paid.

“All circumstances are different, especially in collegiate athletics with major college coaches,” Tanner told the newspaper.

It’s been a tough week for the Gamecocks. Tanner said the athletic department lost more than $2 million by playing last Saturday’s game against LSU at Baton Rouge. Spurrier’s deal with South Carolina also includes several perks such as parking spaces.
