The SEC coaching carousel has felt more like a tilt-a-whirl this winter, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

So far, seven of the SEC’s 14 teams have made a change at defensive coordinator, and in many instances the teams in question didn’t even have to look outside the conference for a replacement, which, in turn, caused more movement on the coaching tilt-a-whirl.

There’s certainly been a lot of coaching moves to follow this offseason, so to help keep track of it all here’s a timeline of the SEC’s defensive coordinator hirings and firings since the end of the regular season:

Nov. 28 — Texas A&M fires Mark Snyder: The Aggies parted ways with Snyder one day after a loss to LSU in their regular season finale on Thanksgiving night. Texas A&M ranked 104th in the FBS in total defense, allowing opponents to amass more than 450 yards per game.

Nov. 30 — Auburn fires Ellis Johnson: Two days after Snyder was fired and one day after allowing Alabama to score an Iron Bowl-record 55 points in its regular season finale, Auburn parted ways with defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson. The Tigers allowed opponents to score at least 30 points in seven of their final eight games.

Dec. 8 — Vanderbilt fires David Kotulski: A little more than a week removed from the end of the regular season, Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason parted ways with both of his coordinators, including DC David Kotulski. The Commodores ranked 106th in the nation in scoring defense, giving up more than 33 points per game.

Dec. 12 — Auburn hires Will Muschamp: The Tigers made the first major splash of the offseason in hiring Will Muschamp as their new defensive coordinator. Muschamp has a proven history as a successful defensive coordinator, but was fired as head coach of the Florida Gators earlier this offseason after four years on the job. Auburn broke the bank for Muschamp and will pay him $1.6-1.8 million.

Dec. 14 — Missouri State hires Dave Steckel away from Missouri: The Tigers lost defensive coordinator Dave Steckel after he served more than a decade with the team, including six years as the DC. Steckel was hired as the next head coach at Missouri State. Following this spring’s NFL Draft, Steckel will have coached six defensive linemen drafted into the league in a five-year span.

Dec. 16 — Florida hires Geoff Collins away from Mississippi State: Jim McElwain, Muschamp’s replacement with the Gators, made noise in gathering his first coaching staff at Florida by hiring Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins away from MSU to take the same position at UF. Bulldogs head coach Dan Mullen called the move a lateral one, but the MSU defense certainly struggled in a 49-34 Orange Bowl loss without Collins on the sidelines.

Dec. 23 — Missouri hires Barry Odom: Mizzou needed less than 10 days to find a replacement for Steckel, turning to former Tigers’ defensive assistant and last year’s Memphis DC Barry Odom to take the DC job in Columbia.

Dec. 31 — Texas A&M hires John Chavis away from LSU: More than a month after parting ways with Snyder, Texas A&M finally pulled the trigger on a blockbuster move in stealing LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis from Baton Rouge. Chavis boasted five straight top-15 defenses his last five years at LSU, and although he was the third-highest paid defensive coordinator in the country in 2014, he got a pay raise to head to College Station.

Jan. 5 — Mississippi State hires Manny Diaz: The Bulldogs went full-circle in their defensive coordinator search, eventually settling on Louisiana Tech DC Manny Diaz to lead the MSU defense. Diaz served as Mississippi State’s DC in 2010 before moving on to hold the same position at the University of Texas for three years from 2011-13. Diaz’s 2010 Mississippi State defense ranked 49th in the FBS.

Jan. 7 — Derek Mason opts to run Vanderbilt defense himself: After spending close to a month searching for a new defensive coordinator, Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason eventually elected to run the defense himself, using the vacancy left by Kotulski to hire Philadelphia Eagles assistant Todd Lyght as the team’s cornerbacks coach. Mason, who served as the defensive coordinator at Stanford for three years before arriving in Nashville, will call all defensive plays during the 2015 season. Mason’s defenses from 2011-13 ranked 28th, 20th and 16th, respectively, in the nation.

Jan. 13 — LSU hires Kevin Steele away from Alabama: In need of a replacement for Chavis following his unexpected departure for A&M, LSU turned to Alabama linebackers coach and former Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to be its DC in 2015. Steele is known for his recruiting prowess, but his last season as a defensive coordinator, his Clemson defense ranked 64th in the nation.
