The Sept. 10 matchup between Tennessee and Virginia Tech at Bristol Motor Speedy in Bristol, Tenn. has long been circled on the calendar of Volunteers and Hokies everywhere. The game, being billed as the “Battle at Bristol”, is expected to have a college football record of 150,000 attendees.

Even though grandstand seats for the Week 2 showdown are sold out, the Bristol Motor Speedway is far from finished with promotion. At Sunday’s Food City 500 race, the speedway arranged to have former UT quarterback Peyton Manning, an honorary race official, throw a pass to promote the big game. It did not go as planned.

Earlier this year, the speedway released a rendering of its planned “Colossus” scoreboard and the infield’s transformation into a football field, complete with Tennessee’s checkered end zone.
