A few days after South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier railed against the media for questioning his continued competency, the Gamecocks have added two commitments to its 2016 class.

Spurrier accused his “enemies” of trying to bring down the program after many questioned whether the 70-year-old is close to retiring. South Carolina has had trouble recruiting after a 7-6 season as well as comments Spurrier made to The State at the end of 2014 suggesting he may hang it up in two or three years.

After making an aggressive play to show that he intends to coach for several more seasons, Spurrier added a defensive back Friday. Offensive tackle Akeem Cooperwood also committed on Saturday, becoming the 10th player to pledge to the Gamecocks in the 2016 class.

Cooperwood, 6-foot-7 and 325 pounds, is a consensus three-star player from Georgia Military College. He’s likely to play right tackle for South Carolina.

“I think it was amazing the way the coaches treated me,” Cooperwood said after a visit to Columbia, S.C., on Friday, according to 247Sports. “I liked the atmosphere and the players showed me love. The food was great. It was fun overall.”

South Carolina’s 2016 recruiting class still ranks No. 12 in the SEC and No. 46 overall. The group includes just a pair of four-star commitments at this point.
