For the second consecutive season, a Heisman campaign for South Carolina’s best player appears over before it started.

Steve Spurrier said Sunday that Mike Davis likely won’t play in next weekend’s game against East Carolina, citing the running back’s bruised ribs suffered last Thursday against Texas A&M.

“Right now, he’s sort of doubtful,” Spurrier said Sunday during his teleconference. “Our trainers said he’s not practicing for a few days. I guess later in the week, we’ll see how he’s conditioned. It’s a bad bruised, bruised ribs, and it’s painful right now.”

Davis carried the football six times for 15 yards in the opener before exiting the game early second half.

He did not return.

Brandon Wilds, who led the team with 45 yards rushing on nine carries, will get first-team reps in practice this week. Shon Carson and David Williams are also expected to play against the Pirates.

“David needs to play a little bit,” Spurrier said. “He’s going on his second year here now. He’s a good sized back and I think he needs to carry the ball some. He will probably get some carries this coming week.”
