TEXAS A&M FRESHMAN QB KYLE ALLEN

Stats: 96-of-157, 61.1 percent, 1,028 passing yards, 12 passing TDs, 6 INTs, 10 sacks, 133.7 rating

Big-time game: The best game of his freshman year came against the Auburn Tigers. Allen went 19-of-29 for 277 yards with four touchdowns and one pick. It was a huge win for the Aggies and a big confidence boost for the freshman quarterback. He showed just how good he can be during that game and was really spinning it well.

Not his best effort: He didn’t really have a terrible game, but he didn’t play all that great in the season finale against LSU. In that game Allen went 17-of-27 for 144 yards with one touchdown and one pick. Like I said, not a terrible game but not his best. That’s not the kind of outcome you want when you’re heading into a bowl game.

Improvements: I think he’ll continue to improve the more game reps he gets. People don’t understand how important game reps are. When the bullets are flying and you have 300-pounders hitting you like a truck, it helps to be used to it.

Strengths: He has the size (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) and arm talent to be a special player. He can sling it around the field and make all the throws.

Weakness: He isn’t Johnny Manziel and doesn’t have that sort of scramble ability. He can probably work on that, but as far as being a pocket passer, he’s the best option for the Aggies. One weakness I do notice is the two gloves he wears. That is my personal opinion, but I absolutely can’t stand quarterbacks wearing two gloves. That drives me crazy.

Overall: I like Allen and think he has all the tools to be successful in coach Kevin Sumlin’s offense. He doesn’t scramble and run near as much as Manziel, but that can always change. He will need a solid showing in their bowl game to solidify his starting roll. If he plays poorly, we could see Kenny Hill back in the equation and that’s not what the Aggies need. As the saying goes, if you have two quarterbacks, you have none.
