It’s been reported throughout the spring that running back Brandon Williams will play some cornerback this fall. He split time at corner and running back during spring practice. However, Williams may play more corner than previously thought.

Prior to Thursday night’s Brazos County Coach’s Night at the Brazos County Expo, Sumlin confirmed that Williams will start fall camp at cornerback, mostly because the Aggies need more depth and bigger impact players at the position.

“He can always come back and play running back, we know that,” Sumlin said, via Houston Chronicle. “Let’s see what he can do, and he’s excited about it. If he can help us (on defense), and it helps him in his career, it will be a great move for both of us.”

Texas A&M is excited about Williams’ size and ability and how he could make a rather smooth transition to the position.

“(Brandon Williams) has got average size at 6 foot and 195 or 200 pounds for a running back, maybe a little below average,” Sumlin said. “But you’ve got a cornerback (at that size) he goes to the top of the charts, because he’s one of the fastest guys on the team, if he can make the transition.”

The one thing that sticks out immediately about new defensive coordinator John Chavis’ time while at LSU was the defensive secondary play. Known for having elite cornerbacks year-after-year, if anyone can help make Williams an impact player at the position, Chavis certainly can.

A few other notes from Sumlin’s appearance:

  • On the topic of defensive backs, Sumlin gave some insight into how the back end of the Aggies defense will look this fall. According to the Chronicle, Sumlin said that the Aggies would be playing much more man converage under Chavis. He also didn’t differentiate which position starting safeties Armani Watts and Justin Evans will play, either free or strong, and said they’d play “in the center of the field somewhere.”
  • The coach said that all members of Texas A&M’s 2015 signing class are enrolled and on campus for summer classes. That includes Kyler Murray, although Murray is going home this weekend for his high school graduation ceremony.
  • Sumlin had kind words for junior college quarterback transfer Jake Hubernak, calling him “a really good player” who picked Texas A&M over several other schools. Per TexAgs.com, Sumlin said that Hubernak is going to get a chance to compete for a job so that if forced into action he’s ready to roll. While Kyle Allen is the clear-cut starter, Sumlin thinks the depth at the poistion is going to be a positive for the Aggies.
