Texas A&M has been without a defensive coordinator for more than a month, but Kevin Sumlin is zeroing in on a hire. After telling media on Monday that he hopes to have a hire within a week, multiple news outlets have reported that the Aggies are pursuing LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis.

Chavis has been the defensive coordinator for the Tigers for the last six seasons, building top-15 defenses every year since 2010. The Tigers rank No. 8 in total defense this season and are set to take on Notre Dame in the Music City Bowl on Tuesday.

He’s also one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in the country, having earned $1.31 million in 2014. That ranked him third behind Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster, who was reportedly a Texas A&M target before signing an extension, and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.

LSU has reportedly offered Chavis a contract extension, but the defensive coordinator has not yet signed it. According to reports, the extension would keep his salary at $1.3 million. Chavis’ current contract with LSU runs through December 2015.

Despite his lofty pay status, Chavis may be looking for a raise from either LSU or Texas A&M. NOLA.com’s report indicated that the Aggies have offered Chavis a three-year contract that would pay him $1.7 million per year, placing him alongside new Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp for the highest assistant coach salary in the country.
