The Tennessee Volunteers finished the 2014 season with a 7-6 record and their first bowl game victory since 2008. The Vols went 4-1 in their final five games, including three wins against SEC teams.

The success followed Butch Jones’ decision to start quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who was on pace to redshirt before making his debut during the third drive of Week 9 against Alabama. The rising junior has a plethora of returning talent at wide receiver and is expected to emerge as a star.

Here’s an analysis of Tennessee’s current quarterback situation in 2015:

2014 quarterback: Dobbs, 1,206 passing yards, 9 TD, 6 INT, 63.3 completion percentage; 587 rushing yards, 8 TD, 104 attempts (six appearances).

2015 favorite: Dobbs

Others involved: Rising redshirt junior Nathan Peterman (who coaches confirmed was still on Tennessee’s roster), early enrollees Jauan Jennings (No. 6 dual-threat QB) and Quinten Dormady (No. 13 pro-style QB) and new commit Sheriron Jones (No. 7 dual-threat QB).

When it will be decided: It’s already decided.

Level of concern (1-10): 1. Dobbs solidified his place as Tennessee’s starting quarterback after his historic performance against South Carolina. The sophomore became the first player in school history to record more than 300 passing yards and 100 rushing yards. Dobbs’ health should be the lone concern for Tennessee fans, which hasn’t been a problem so far in his career. But his backups’ lack of experience and poor play from Peterman would cause a stir in Knoxville should he miss considerable time due to injury.

Biggest ally: Marquez North. Sure, the rising junior failed to live up to lofty expectations in his second season, but he was one of many Vols receivers to battle injuries in 2014. North also saw double coverage, which should be less common with several other talented pass catchers returning to Tennessee’s lineup. The 6-foot-4, 221-pound playmaker has the natural ability to become an elite college receiver and should continue his development in his third season. Again, Dobbs has a full disposal of wideouts including Von Pearson, Pig Howard and a more experienced Josh Malone, but North stands out as the team’s top target entering 2015.
